The AI in the Liberal Arts initiative at Amherst College invites you to the first installment of our two-part event exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and human connection. Join us for a screening of Spike Jonze’s critically acclaimed film “Her” (2013).
This thought-provoking movie follows a lonely writer who develops an unexpected relationship with an AI operating system designed to meet his every need. What makes this screening particularly fascinating is that “Her” is set in the year 2025—our present day! When created over a decade ago, the film offered a speculative vision of AI’s role in our lives that we can now compare to our actual reality.
Adding another layer of intrigue, the film has recently been at the center of conversations about AI voice technology following a dispute between OpenAI and Scarlett Johansson, who voices the AI character in the movie.
Stay tuned for details about our follow-up discussion featuring Professor Mark Firmani from the Law, Jurisprudence & Social Thought department, who recommended this cinematic exploration of AI ethics and human relationships.
Don’t miss this opportunity to reflect on how fictional representations of AI from just a decade ago compare to the technology we interact with today!
